Social Media Practitioners: Your help is needed!
Jun 26th
Help Social Media.
They say social media is dying. They say social media has too much publicity. They say nobody really knows what social media is. Is that what you say?
The Situation
If you haven’t heard, NC State has added a social media course to its MBA Curriculum. For those in the Raleigh area and the many @triangletweetup folks, this is great news! MBA 590 Social Networks and Web 2.0 Media in Marketing will serve as a trendsetting course exploring all things social media, virtual world, and Web 2.0.
The Kicker
I’ve worked with Claudia Kimbrough for years in various Marketing courses at NC State and am fortunate enough to be a Visiting Lecturer for this course. Having dipped my toes in social media, I’m smart enough to know that I don’t know everything. There are tons of subject matter experts, and even a large number within driving distance to the NCSU campuses. This leads me to my main point.
The Call to Action
With most of us having full-time jobs, massive amounts of responsibility, and priorities involving multiple departments in our organizations, social media has become a great personal branding outlet. You can show your expertise, offer insight, connect to others, and build your network. This is where we need your help.
Social media by nature is a living, breathing creature that is constantly evolving. We want to keep this course fresh, up to date, and balanced. This post is going to serve as a stake in the ground. I’m appealing to you, the social media practitioners to propose what you feel should be included in this course. It could be a number of things:
- A core concept
- A fundamental tool or product
- An up and coming strategy
- A social media network
- Things to avoid doing or practicing
- Tips for successful implementation
You are all smart people. Please help us continue to add value to this course by suggesting what you would like to see included. We may even call on some of you to join us in class for a session and impart your knowledge!
Trust is also important. I can assure you that anything you suggest will be credited to you. Whether it is in a course slideshow, or teaching a concept, we will make it a point to stress who suggested that “module” and help to increase your personal brand.
The fact that the course itself can be a social media outlet by having interactive content and suggestions is exciting. I hope that some of you find this as appealing as I do. Thanks for taking the time to read this.
Please help and post your feedback or suggestions below.

Sex offender tries to volunteer at Athens Drive High School
Jan 13th
Hard Candy.
Thank you Technology! A computerized lobby system at a local high school prevented a convicted sex offender from “volunteering.” Read this excerpt from ABC11:
WAKE COUNTY (WTVD) — Wake County school officials say they have technology to keep their students safe.
Last Friday, Raleigh Police say a registered sex offender tried to get onto Athens Drive High School’s campus, but a machine alerted them and they were able to call police.
The kiosk inside Athens Drive High reads drivers licenses, then runs a quick background check. If everything is okay, it prints a badge with your name and picture. If you are flagged, the badge won’t print and it notifies school officials.
That’s what happened when police say 30-year-old Marcus Johnson tried to volunteer at Athens Drive High School. When he signed in using the school’s computer system it flagged his name.
Johnson is a registered sex offender convicted of incest and statutory rape.
“You’re putting a perimeter out there that really is keeping the worst kind of person off of your school grounds,” Kevin Allen said.
Allen is the president of LobbyGuard. They design and manufacture the machine. It’s inside 30 Wake County schools and it’s what kept out Johnson.
“If you’re a parent or guardian you don’t often have the luxury of running a three week background check on that person if they’re picking up a child,” Allen said. “You need something instant you need something effective and that means sex offender background checking and they get it back in less than a half a second.
In a split second a person’s information is cross checked with a database of more than 500,000 registered sex offenders.
Schools can also check for visitors who may be red-flagged for any number of reasons.
“It caught people that were not supposed to be here, so it’s working,” student Chris Wolfe said.
“Were very fortunate in this area to have very good schools obviously schools conserved with the safety of children and who is coming in and out,” parent Mike Close said.
Wake County is working to buy more of the kiosks for other schools.
Meanwhile, as technology becomes more advanced the machines will be able to run more extensive background checks, for things like a violent or criminal background.

From TBJ: What should I do if I lose my job?
Jan 6th

For those of you dealing with the tough economy, this article provides a good roadmap of how to land on your feet as you begin your search.
“It’s a question that no one wants to contemplate: How do I get unemployment benefits if I lose my job?
Unfortunately, these days, more folks are having to answer that question. The jobless rate across North Carolina was 7.9 percent in November – a month that saw the state shed 58,000 jobs. So many people are out of work that the Employment Security Commission of North Carolina has reported server troubles with its Web site this week.
Here are some tips to follow if you lose your job.
• First, figure out whether you’re eligible for unemployment benefits . According to the ESC, you must have worked in two of the quarters in a “base period” – typically the first four of the past five calendar quarters – to be eligible. You also must have become unemployed through no fault of your own; this means people who are fired for cause or who quit their jobs might not be eligible. And you are not eligible for unemployment benefits until any separation pay (severance pay, vacation pay, etc.) runs out.
• If you are eligible, get what you need to file for benefits . You must have the dates of your last employment and the amount you were paid. If you aren’t a citizen, you might need your alien registration number. If you were in the military, you might need your dates of service.
• Apply for benefits . There are three ways to file for unemployment benefits in North Carolina. You can apply at your local branch office of the ESC; those locations can be found here . You can apply at the ESC’s Web site . Or you can call a toll-free, 24-hour number: (877) 841-9617. If you have questions, click on one of the e-mail links on this page.“
